By Graham Pymer, MLA Cattle: LWB 22 – LWY 395 – LWC 140 – OAY 0 Naracoorte agents yarded an increased number this week with 557 head penned. They were made up of 395 young cattle, 190 cows and 22 bulls. Quality ranged from average to good with some excellent pens of heavy beef bred cows yarded selling to stronger demand. The usual buying group attended and operated in a mostly firm to dearer market in places. Young cattle sold from 288c to 356c/kg with feeders and restockers paying from 200c to 355c/kg. Grown steers sold from 310c to 330c to the trade to be similar. Better covered grown heifers sold from 200c to 305c/kg to be 5c/kg stronger on last week. It’s all action for Agriculture at Naracoorte High

Ag Speak: By Kristin Murdock  While the Adelaide Royal Show is not until September, the Naracoorte High School Agricultural Studies students are already preparing for the challenge. With steers and Merino wethers to get in shape, Ag Studies teacher, Emma Phillip is excited there are over 40 students being involved in the program and praises their commitment. “This includes after school training to train the animals and working as a team to develop showmanship skills,” she said. “Students are involved in the whole process, from working with the animals to feeding, general husbandry tasks and learning how to parade animals for the show. Currently, the school has nine steers and 10 merino wethers being prepared.” The Year 10 students have also enjoyed working with the wethers to learn about fibre production and how to judge the animals on constitution, conformation, and wool quality. By Chris Oldfield NARACOORTE’S Lachlan Haynes says he is “seriously considering” standing for Liberal preselection when nominations open for MacKillop. Radiation therapy, rural doctors, housing availability, local access to training and education for trades and services, road maintenance – the issues roll off the tongue of Mr Haynes who last year was elected an SA Liberal Party State vice-president. He is best known for leading the fight for radiation therapy services in the SE with a petition of 20,000 signatures forcing a parliamentary inquiry. “No longer should a regional postcode determine you automatically receive a lesser service or (reduced) health service,” he said. Mr Haynes explained the SE is the engine room of this State’s wealth. Roundabouts tally $14.6 million

By Chris Oldfield NARACOORTE’S roundabouts have a total expenditure of $14.6 million, according to the SA Government’s 2023-24 budget papers. That includes a further $2.75 million listed to be spent before June 2024. Ironically, a 2004 Naracoorte Lucindale Council ignored the community’s call for stop lights, claiming roundabouts were going to be cheaper. The $14.6 million listing is on page 113 of Budget Statement – Budget Paper 3. But it represents money spent since 2020. Explaining the expenditure to The News, Regional Roads Minister Geoff Brock said the $14.6 million Rural Roads Package – Naracoorte Roundabouts project “has comprised upgrades to two existing roundabouts located in Naracoorte”. Regarding the Riddoch Hwy-Wimmera Hwy/Smith St-Lucindale Rd roundabout, Mr Brock said it involved full reconstruction of the roundabout, kerb realignment, upgraded road lighting, line marking, new underground drainage and pavement reconstruction. “Main works were completed in June 2020, with a minor redesign of […]

Somewhat damp underfoot with a flooded carpark, a few roof leakages and wet weather recesses and lunches all have added to the usual daily events at NPS. It is hard to believe that the term has almost come to an end. It has been a very productive term with a variety of achievements across the school. We started with the Colour Run in Week 1 (only to have it postponed due to rain), followed by South East Cross Country, Choir performances, Pedal Prix, a parent reading workshop, Sapsasa and a cookout to name just a few of the major happenings. By Paul Mitchell A 50/1 success last week added another chapter to the Jaensch stable’s history of producing long-priced winners.  Debutante Gusty Way saluted at the Murray Bridge midweek meeting (paying $55.60 on the TAB tote), but local mother-son training team Sue and Jason Jaensch hardly fell off their chairs after the one-length win.  “No, we weren’t surprised,” said Naracoorte-based Sue. “We knew he went alright.”  Gusty Way’s win sparked memories of the stable’s past winning longshots, headlined by a remarkable two-day double that saluted at odds of around 6000/1.  “I went to Melbourne one day and won a race at 75/1 with Bronze Roulette, who went on to win the Swan Hill Cup,” Sue recalled.  “And the next day we had a maiden horse win at 82/1.”  Sue recalls Madja blowing punters out of the water at 100/1 at Stawell one day, but a Naracoorte Cup roughie is her […]

I have come to the conclusion that it is no longer tenable for me to remain in the Liberal party. I have been a proud member of this party for more than 30 years, so this has been an extremely difficult decision for me. I believe my constituents and electorate will be better served by me working as the Independent Member for MacKillop. My primary aim is to achieve better outcomes for the people of the MacKilllop electorate. I believe a party should work together regardless of individual beliefs to achieve good results for their community. Minister admits challenges at hospital

By Nasik Swami South Australian minister for Health and Wellbeing has admitted that infrastructure issues at the Naracoorte Hospital “have been long ignored”. Chris Picton said the issues would be fixed soon, assuring the public that many plans have been put in place that will address the most urgent and critical needs at the hospital. Responding to questions from The News, Mr Picton said, unlike the previous Liberal Government, the Malinauskas Labor Government was investing in regional health, including at Naracoorte. “There’s no doubt there are infrastructure issues at the hospital that have been long ignored. By Nasik Swami A lot of money will be spent on upgrading the Naracoorte Hospital in the next 12 months to ensure it provides “good and safe” services to the public. Limestone Coast Local Health Network Board chairman Grant King says they have received $8million from the state government for stage one upgrade work at the facility. The News continues to be asked by many of its readers to “find out” the strategic direction of the Naracoorte Hospital and what those in power are doing to fix the many challenges the public faces at the hospital.
