High flying advice on health care

High flying advice on health care

By Wayne Hawthorne Words of medical advice were given to Probus men at their recent meeting while listening to the incredible career of Dr Sarah Mott who is now lecturing at TAFE Mount Gambier, Department of Nursing. Because men are generally poor at addressing physical and mental health, they were told to “get a grease and oil change regularly, irrespective”. If they cannot get a doctor appointment, they were told to “book one well in advance and use or re-schedule as required. It won’t go to waste if unused”. It became apparent that with her career background, Dr Sarah Mott was eminently qualified to speak of these and other medical matters. Sarah commenced nursing in a small country surgical hospital in UK, and worked in various positions in: Fort Myers, Florida; the Middle East; Geelong; Perth; Sydney; Adelaide; and now Mount Gambier. Certainly a highflyer, given she is a qualified […]

Top Tips for Embracing a Healthy Lifestyle

Top Tips for Embracing a Healthy Lifestyle

Column: Kerrie Cleggett, IN 2 HEALTH  In the fast-paced world we live in where convenience sometimes takes preference – it’s crucial to prioritize a healthy lifestyle that nourishes both body and mind. Here are some of my top tips: 1. Balanced Diet:  Eat a range of fruits, vegetables, proteins, grains, and healthy fats. Reduce processed food as much as possible. Eating a well-balanced diet will give your body the vital nutrients it needs to thrive. When you are eating nutrient dense foods you won’t crave less nutrient dense foods.  2. Regular Exercise:  Physical activity is of high importance in a healthy lifestyle. Make time for regular exercise that suits your fitness level and personal preferences. By staying active, you enhance your cardiovascular health and boost your overall well-being. 3. Hydration: Adequate hydration plays a vital role in maintaining good health. Water requirements may vary depending on your size and activity […]

Minister admits challenges at hospital

By Nasik Swami South Australian minister for Health and Wellbeing has admitted that infrastructure issues at the Naracoorte Hospital “have been long ignored”. Chris Picton said the issues would be fixed soon, assuring the public that many plans have been put in place that will address the most urgent and critical needs at the hospital. Responding to questions from The News, Mr Picton said, unlike the previous Liberal Government, the Malinauskas Labor Government was investing in regional health, including at Naracoorte. “There’s no doubt there are infrastructure issues at the hospital that have been long ignored. This is why we have committed $8m towards the first stage of the redevelopment of Naracoorte Hospital. “We were able to fund this project when we cancelled the previous plans for a $662m city basketball stadium and invested those funds into health.” Mr Picton explained that plans for the first stage of upgrades to […]

Hospital works

By Nasik Swami A lot of money will be spent on upgrading the Naracoorte Hospital in the next 12 months to ensure it provides “good and safe” services to the public. Limestone Coast Local Health Network Board chairman Grant King says they have received $8million from the state government for stage one upgrade work at the facility. The News continues to be asked by many of its readers to “find out” the strategic direction of the Naracoorte Hospital and what those in power are doing to fix the many challenges the public faces at the hospital. Some readers alleged the deteriorating state of the hospital’s old infrastructure included leaking roofs, electrical failures, plumbing problems, and damp walls. This newspaper sought comment and put questions to Mr King and the Minister for Health and Wellbeing, Chris Picton, on what was being done to improve services at the public hospital. Mr King […]

Running for Premature Babies

By Sophie, founder of the charity Running for Premature Babies I started this charity 17 years ago after losing all three of my prematurely born triplets to their prematurity. I wanted to reach out to you as a local young man in your community who was born at the same gestation as my triplets but was lucky enough to survive, and who is now doing something amazing and I would so love for your local Naracoorte News to publish this story! Lachy Miles, aged 25, is taking part in the Run Melbourne running event on Sunday 16 July to support my charity, which is raising funds for a lifesaving neonatal ventilator for the Monash Newborn NICU, which will save the lives of premature babies. Lachy’s story is remarkable. Born at 23 weeks gestation he wasn’t expected to survive this premature birth and was given a 20% chance of survival. Lachy […]

People still getting sick

By Chris Oldfield COVID, various types of influenza and “man-flu” as well as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are making some people very sick throughout the district. The Federal Government announced last February it was closing the Naracoorte Respiratory Clinic. But that did not mean the end of COVID or other respiratory illnesses for residents and visitors. “COVID is certainly still going through Naracoorte at the moment,” Dr Jeffery Taylor said. In 2020 Dr Taylor of Kincraig Medical Clinic was the first doctor rostered for the government’s respiratory clinic. Now three years later, there have been some big changes regarding COVID. “The big advantage now is with most people having had their vaccinations, and also having access to antivirals, we’ve been able to mitigate the severity of COVID dramatically,” Dr Taylor said. “So, people are a lot more aware (and) they want to get themselves tested early. “Some people breeze through […]

No real incentives

By Nasik Swami Shadow Minister for Regional Health Services Penny Pratt says the state government has failed to offer real incentives in the budget to attract and retain doctors and nurses to the region. Ms Pratt said she was “very disappointed with last week’s State Labor Budget, which ploughed an extra $2.3billion just into health but did nothing to offer real incentives”. “While the Victorian Labor Government has put $201million on the table to entice health workers to move there, the best Minister Chris Picton can offer is a reimbursement of up to $15,000 once an overseas trained doctor has already moved to our state,” Ms Pratt said. “When we crunch the numbers, they are still out of pocket by up to $23,000. The numbers just don’t stack up.” She said the only new money in the budget for the Limestone Coast was $1million to undertake a planning study for […]

Radiation submission lodged

Radiation submission lodged

By Chris Oldfield AN SA Legislative Review Committee inquiring into radiation therapy in the Limestone Coast is underway in State Parliament. A written submission by the Limestone Coast Radiation Therapy Working Group includes the awful experiences of many forced to travel to Adelaide, including Naracoorte’s “Lisa” and “Graham Hinze”. The contribution from Lisa involves a Naracoorte doctor who sent her straight away for scans after she presented with her breast “not feeling right”. She could not get all the scans done in Mount Gambier on the same day, so travelled to Adelaide and had all the procedures done there. “The following day the Naracoorte doctors rang with the bad news and made an appointment with Dr McLeay who visits the South East,” Lisa wrote in the submission. “I was lucky I got in the next day, he informed me it was cancer and the next journey starts. “I had more […]

$550,000 machine saving more lives

PATIENTS arriving at Naracoorte Hospital from vehicle crashes, farm accidents and sports injuries will no longer be always sent away for further high tech, detailed computer tomography scans. Similarly, those requiring comprehensive images – perhaps of their brain, heart or kidneys – will no longer need to travel to Mount Gambier or Adelaide. A scanner installed 7.5 years ago – which saved hundreds of lives – has now been replaced with a $550,000 new, faster, high-tech one. And not one cent of government funding was involved. More than a decade ago, leading doctors at Kincraig Medical Clinic identified the need for a CT scanner at Naracoorte. With no support from governments or the health bureaucracy of the day, doctors turned to the community they wanted to help. Seed funding of $6000 was soon announced by Dr Brian Norcock following a 2010 Two Cocks Golf Day. From Robe to Edenhope, Greenways […]

Plastic free July is here again

Your say: Heather Heggie, Naracoorte The Guardian sites tell us many cold and unpleasant truths about plastics globally. The Guardian tells us plastic has increased from 2million tons in 1950 to 368 billion tons in 2019 (not including synthetic fibres), and is expected to reach 600 billion tons in 2025. Packaging, construction and automotive industries use the most plastics. “Over 800 additives to plastic products include phalates, bisphenolA, bromine flame retardants, UV screens and anti microbiol agents, all of which have a negative effect on the biosphere and organic life.” Volatile organic compounds are most evidenced dramatically when toxic houses “explode” in bushfires. (Google the CFS reports recently released after analysing Australia’s catastrophic bushfires.) Many additives are not identified. Recycling plastic increases the toxicity many times and the volatile chemical compounds created by burning, decaying with other substances etc., also increase many times. It is not safe to let plastics […]

By Lidums Dental When the cost of living is on the rise, sometimes our standard of living suffers, and things like dental procedures are put on hold. That’s why an Adelaide prosthodontist* is looking at ways he can help make dental care more affordable through a new payment plan partnership. Lidums Dental in conjunction with Smile Right, is now offering payment plans that enable people to get their teeth fixed now and pay for it later. This means people living in regional towns can stop putting off dental help and take advantage of this payment plan, that allows them to pay off their new smile over 3 years, interest-free. Prosthodontist, Dr Arnis Lidums, says an individual’s smile not only improves their looks, it greatly impacts their confidence and personality. “We have one of the most advanced clinics in the state and we are all about transforming not only people’s smiles, […]
