Lochaber WAB New Year

Lochaber WAB New Year

By Angie Burzacott Tuesday June 6th, Lochaber WAB Members gathered at Lochaber Hall. Following a most enjoyable 2021/2022 year the meeting was called to close business for the 2022/2023 Year. All Office Bearers vacated their positions. The Annual General Meeting then proceeded.  CHAIR PERSON – Chris Thornton SECRETARY – Lyn Bellman Lochaber WAB are a small group of members and at times these positions take some time with care to fill. As numbers have dropped, we opened a discussion about how we all enjoy the friendships, sharing different activities we know that to see this Branch fold, is not an option! Knowing how full everyone’s lives are, the suggestion was put forward, that all of us “share the load”. No one is expected to do it all. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance and ideas and plans can be fulfilled. Each year WAB choose a “Country Of Study”. This year […]

First taste of 2023 looks a classic

First taste of 2023 looks a classic

By Coonawarra Vignerons The Coonawarra Wine industry, together with other representatives from the Limestone Coast Wine Region, have gathered to undertake a ‘post vintage tasting’ of over 100 wines from the 2023 Vintage. Wine bottles lined the tables of the Coonawarra Hall on Wednesday 7th June, as winemakers and production staff alike, revealed their offerings in an opportunity to gain a view of the 2023 vintage from across the region. Bruce Gregory, Senior Winemaker for Majella Wines, has been involved with hosting the Post Vintage tasting for quite a few years, and was very impressed with the samples that had been submitted for tasting from producers across the region. “There is no shortage of variety in the bottles presented, from light whites to robust reds. To some extent many of the wines are in an unfinished condition, however, the tasting is by no means a wine show.” “It’s an opportunity […]

Go girls!

Go girls!

By Kristin Murdock Women in agriculture in Australia are actively involved in various aspects of the agricultural industry. They play crucial roles in farming, agribusiness, research, education, and advocacy. The agricultural sector in Australia offers numerous opportunities for girls and women to pursue rewarding careers and make significant contributions to the industry’s development and sustainability. The desire to contribute to the traditionally male-dominated industry is evident in the Naracoorte area, with Naracoorte High School students, keen to be a part of the sector. NHS students, Eliza and Millie, who are in Year 7, are both keen to have a future in agriculture and are currently studying the subject as part of their curriculum. “I really think girls can play a big part in the agriculture industry,” Millie said. Eliza, who hails from a farm near Naracoorte said she loved the lifestyle and the opportunities it offers. “Even though we have […]

People still getting sick

By Chris Oldfield COVID, various types of influenza and “man-flu” as well as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are making some people very sick throughout the district. The Federal Government announced last February it was closing the Naracoorte Respiratory Clinic. But that did not mean the end of COVID or other respiratory illnesses for residents and visitors. “COVID is certainly still going through Naracoorte at the moment,” Dr Jeffery Taylor said. In 2020 Dr Taylor of Kincraig Medical Clinic was the first doctor rostered for the government’s respiratory clinic. Now three years later, there have been some big changes regarding COVID. “The big advantage now is with most people having had their vaccinations, and also having access to antivirals, we’ve been able to mitigate the severity of COVID dramatically,” Dr Taylor said. “So, people are a lot more aware (and) they want to get themselves tested early. “Some people breeze through […]

We are a New Metrics School! Naracoorte High partners with University of Melbourne

By Naracoorte High School Universities and leaders in Business across Australia have been in discussions about the skills students leave school with, and how what were traditionally known as “soft-skills”, for example Communication, Collaboration and Quality Thinking, are actually essential to success. How can information about these skills be captured in a reliable way, and how does this form a part of University entry requirements, or used in a pathway to employment? In 2022 and 2023 Naracoorte High has been a part of a Research Project with the University of Melbourne, a partnership which centres on the assessment and recognition of complex competencies, such as those listed above. Naracoorte High has been working in the area of Agency in Learning, determining how schools can work in partnership with families and community to give students the skills to independently know what to learn, how to learn it and who to learn […]

Lucindale Economic Development Board Inc (LINC)

Lucindale Economic Development Board Inc (LINC)

By Abigail Goodman The Lucindale Economic Development Board Inc (LINC) aims to be the link between community ideas and making them happen. It was established 20 years ago to promote the development of the Lucindale district and community by developing projects, identifying funding opportunities and acting as an umbrella body for various community organisations/projects. LINC organises the community Christmas party each year, including a parade and Santa visit, and in 2022 we also had market stalls run by local children and highly competitive yabby racing! One of our current projects is raising funds to support a Lucindale community member to participate in the Limestone Coast Emerging Leaders Program. The Program develops personal leadership skills, knowledge of the region and a broad network of professional and community contacts. Participants will grow in emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and skills in working with and leading others, which will benefit their communities and our entire […]
