By Bridging the Gap. Twenty four ladies played 30 boards last week & once again the South direction had few points. In the E/W direction, huge congratulations to novice players Mary Lush & Yvonne Hegarty who had a fabulous 59.33%  followed by freshly paired, Robyn Talbot & Jenni Castine who scored very well with 57%.  N/S winners were Rosie Legoe & Sally Macdonald with 56.33%, the ever consistent Jill Perkins & Sars Crawford followed with 54.33 & the remaining pairs in that direction were not far behind.  Well done to Susie Mort & Sue Munro who are both novices & scored a creditable 45%.  It’s really encouraging seeing these new bridge players developing their knowledge & persevering with this intricate card game.  Thank you to both Sue Hood & Jill Redway who have helped beginners with various bridge topics.  Sue recently held a lesson on playing No Trump hands which […]

Austrian family return after 15 years

Austrian family return after 15 years

By David & Leanne Robertson. Fifteen years ago, back in 2008, David & Leanne Robertson were on a weekend camping trip with their family at Halls Gap in Victoria. Alongside them, was a family from Austria, also exploring the area for a few days. As happens, on camping trips, the two families got chatting and despite only sharing 3 or 4 nights together, a friendship was formed. Andy & Petra, along with their two young boys, were in Australia for a 10-month long holiday. As their date of departure was getting closer, they were making plans to leave their vehicle and camping gear in lock-up storage in Sydney as they hoped to return within a couple of years to see more of the country. After inquiring about options, it became obvious that this wasn’t a viable plan as storage costs were quite prohibitive. Having kept in touch with each other […]

Lucindale Ladies Golf 6th September 2023

Lucindale Ladies Golf 6th September 2023

By Rosie Legoe. Last week’s competition was the ‘Shepherds Hill’ Monthly Medal Stroke round generously sponsored by the England family who are long-time supporters of the Lucindale Country Club: special thanks to Min England sourcing such useful & beautiful prizes. Although fine & warm weather was enjoyed, the strong winds ‘put the wind up’ whilst putting precariously on our fast greens. Thankfully the natives are flowering magnificently & at times helped soothe souls who were tested by either their golf or swooping magpies. We all loved seeing Audrey Brooker back at the clubhouse & great seeing Sharon Menz again after her Queensland holiday. A highlight of the day for majority of golfers was the magnificent monthly medal lunch, thank you to Julie Wilks & Petrina Smith who provided fish & chips! Huge congratulations to the September Monthly Medal, A Grade Gross & Nett Winner, Nicole Hocking with a nett 71 […]

Experienced employees

Experienced employees

Opinion: Kim Radok, Credit Matters. Today, the business community is crying out for employees, yet there seems to be an almost universal campaign to ignore older workers in many businesses. By employing inexperienced and unprofessional employees rather than mature-aged workers, management is exposing their businesses to potentially many profit draining outcomes. The truth is however, generally, mature-aged workers bring many vital skills and experiences to the business. Furthermore, management has nothing to fear as these employees are mostly not interested in taking their jobs and unlike many younger employees, generally have better workplace ethics. There is an old saying, “… you cannot put an old head on young shoulders.” The same applies to your employees. True, younger employees are not burdened by past history, and are generally thinking differently about how a business may operate. In the day-to-day affairs of managing a business however, they lack the experience of older […]

Squash Spring Pennant: Round 1

By Jenny Dickenson. Naracoorte Squash Club commenced their Spring Pennant last Wednesday night with 8 teams of 5 and it was great to see so many new and returning players to squash and we welcome all players for the new pennant. There were some long and great games on the first night ensuring it will be an interesting 12 weeks. Returning player Bryce who has not played for many years started the season well with a convincing win over Ewen who has stepped up to No. 2 with a big improvement last pennant. Vicki had a huge 5-setter to start the pennant against junior Jordy who was filling in for Lorraine who has had knee surgery and we look forward to her returning soon. Andrew and Jack also had a long and very close 5-set match with Andrew getting 2 more points 63-61 although Jack won the final set 17-15 […]

NLC tours Frances

NLC tours Frances

By Chris Oldfield. THE Frances community will soon boast a BMX track for residents and visiting families to enjoy. The community also hopes to sell its Town Hall and pump the proceeds into upgrades at the Frances Recreation Reserve. It is home to various sporting groups including Border Districts footballers who train in the dark with no lights in one pocket of the oval. And, as the fire season looms, a “wick” full of native vegetation and weeds needs to be cleared along the disused railway line stretching about 5km between Little Desert National Park and Frances. Those were some of the items raised by Frances Progress Association chairman Danielle Moore during a visit to the township by Naracoorte Lucindale Council for its August meeting. Several councillors met in the Town Square before the August 22 council meeting to view the completed $212,000 nature-based project which opened in November 2021. […]
