Naracoorte Branch of Cancer Council SA

By Chris Gale The Naracoorte Branch of Cancer Council SA are a very passionate group who work together to raise much needed funds for Cancer Council SA. The funds raised go to CCSA and is distributed towards cancer research, prevention and support services along with supportive accommodation for regional and remote South Australians. CCSA is South Australia’s leading cancer charity working across every aspect of every cancer. Here in SA they support families affected by cancer when they need it most, they speak out on behalf of the community on cancer issues, empower people to reduce their cancer risk, find new ways to better detect and treat cancer. Funds raised have enabled a new integrated cancer building furnished with all the comforts of home and expertly chosen equipment. Last year our branch was able to contribute funds to fit out one of the rooms in the new facility and many […]

Borders eye premiership

Borders eye premiership

Border Districts once again underlined their premiership credentials for the 2023 KNTFL A grade season with a convincing win over another top contender last Saturday. Playing against fellow top 5 side Naracoorte at Naracoorte’s home ground, Borders raced out of the blocks to have a hold on the game at quarter time. They led 44-7 at quarter time, and built on that lead for the next two quarters before Naracoorte won the last quarter narrowly to go down 17.16 to 10.5. Borders’ former league medallist Mark Quinn was in top form again and was BOG, Zac Richards continued his excellent season and Mackenzie Bower kicked 6 important goals. Naracoorte was well served by Nathan Davey and Keenan Jacobs, and Rory Taggert kicked 3 goals. Padthaway kept its slight finals chances alive with a solid win over battling Bordertown, pulling within two wins of the top 5. The Lions led by […]

Our rights

Our rights

Your Say: KL Moyle Congratulations to Ken Grundy, WT Pomery, Arnie Phitzner and Heather Gibbons on their letters in “Your Say” Wed May 31 2023. 1. Surely it is time for all ordinary people to realise our rights have been and are being eroded at an alarming rate. Sadly, the old adage “You never know what you’ve got until it’s gone,” should make us all alarmed. 2. This government is going to bring our country to its knees, if it continues to spend money on climate change at the rate they are, when other countries are doing little. 3. Why should the World Health Organization have control over our decisions, we should be able to make our own, although the way our government “kow-tows” to others, I wonder are they capable of clear thinking decisions. 4. I will touch lightly on “The voice”, but I will preface my remarks by […]

Freedom of choice

Your Say: Anne Lyons, Naracoorte Regarding the “Pasin Voice” article printed in The News issue 153, 7th June, I think Mr Hignett is underselling the intelligence of Tony Pasin.  Tony would not be voting “No” to keep in with Peter Dutton, but because he believes it will not achieve the outcome desired to better the lives of our Indigenous people.  I also will use my vote to say ‘No” for the same reason. Australians do not like being told what to do. The State Parliament passed the Voice Bill without any of the publicity “The Voice” is getting federally.  It was just hastened through so we are stuck with it. The Indigenous people already have a myriad of committees funded by State and Federal Government.  In the State First Nations Voice Bill it reads that new committees will be formed but only ONE was mentioned to be disbanded.  Why haven’t […]

District towns vie for top agriculture award

By Nasik Swami Naracoorte and Lucindale have been nominated for South Australia’s Agricultural Town of the Year Awards 2023, pinning the importance of the district’s $411million primary production sector. Public voting is now open to choose the top 10 agricultural towns in the region, and the Naracoorte- Lucindale Council is encouraging locals to register their votes for the towns. Council chief executive officer Trevor Smart told The News the nomination provided the opportunity for greater state-wide recognition of the value of agriculture to both towns and the region. “…and highlights the practises of those within the agricultural sector and the benefits that flow onto communities,” Mr Smart said. He said the primary production sector was the significant driver of local, regional, and state economies, with an estimated $411million (annually) in local outputs from the agriculture and forestry sectors, which include some 589 businesses. “I would encourage as many as possible […]

Counsellors warned

By Nasik Swami The use of inappropriate language by elected members of the Naracoorte-Lucindale Council will not be tolerated in the chambers. That’s the warning from mayor Patrick Ross, who says with the livestreaming of the meetings, counsellors must conduct themselves in a manner pleasing to those who are listening and are interested in local matters. Filthy language was aimed at the mayor at his first meeting of the council by elected counsellor Craig Maguire. Mr Ross said this episode won’t be repeated. “I was very early in my term, and I most probably erred in respect. “I hope and expect that an outburst that we may have heard early in the year will never happen again. And if it were, that member would be sanctioned and asked to leave the chamber purely because of their behaviour. “I don’t believe any other mayor I have spoken to since that time […]

Ambitious spending

By Nasik Swami Naracoorte-Lucindale mayor Patrick Ross has defended the council’s ambitious spending on livestreaming council meetings to the public. The council has spent $72,472 for the supply and installation of the live streaming and recording systems in the current council chambers. The previous council had included $40,000 in its budget to enable meetings to be livestreamed, but that never happened. Based on recommendations purely from the council’s IT team, the new council added $32,472, bringing the total spend to $72,472 on the purchase of the livestreaming equipment. In a public letter, former mayor Bill Pomery questioned the council’s spending of ratepayer funds on live streaming the meetings. He asked, “Does the livestreaming merit such a large amount of rate payer money when the meetings were open to the public and media coverage was excellent?” In response, Mr Ross said he wouldn’t be able to tell whether this was a […]

NLC ready to support businesses

By Nasik Swami The Naracoorte-Lucindale Council will do what it can within all townships of the district to provide an environment where business can thrive. That’s the assurance from mayor Patrick Ross to all businesses in the district, which are still recovering from COVID-19 and now feeling the pinch of inflationary pressures. While many businesses in the district failed to remain open after the pandemic, Mr Ross says small businesses in town were “very risky”. “Small business is very risky, and there are many failures for many different reasons, which only a very close look at the business in detail may provide,” he said. Mr Ross said the council’s responsibility was to ensure it provided fit-for-purpose roads and paving as well as maintaining a commercial precinct where businesses could hopefully thrive. “Council also has representation on the Naracoorte Business Organisation (Association), where needs and wants can be discussed and debated […]

Inflation hurting

By Nasik Swami Inflation is hurting, and small businesses in the region are doing it tough. That’s the word from Member of Parliament Tony Pasin, who says the increasing costs of doing business in regional towns are forcing the closure of many small businesses. “More than 150,000 Australian small businesses will see their electricity bills increase by up to $1,310 a year,” Mr Pasin claimed. He said fuel prices were 9.5 percent higher this month than they were in April 2022. “Interest rates are impacting businesses as well as households. Households are having to exercise restraint. “All these increased costs are squeezing small businesses profits while they are still recovering from losses incurred during the pandemic.” He said many businesses could not absorb the increased costs anymore. “The Labor government had an opportunity in last month’s budget to deliver for our small businesses, and they didn’t. “Instead, they delivered a […]
