Naracoorte Mothers Group

Naracoorte Mothers Group

By Jo Vine The Naracoorte Mothers Groups were set up with the aim of connecting local Mum’s who missed out on having their very own mothers group during the last 3-4 COVID years, when such groups were cancelled. We have had over 70 registrants and will run 6 groups in total. So many people stay connected throughout life with other parents and children they’ve met through their mothers groups and with all the isolation which occurred during COVID, we wanted to make sure everyone had the chance to have their own Mothers Group, even if their children were no longer babies. The response to the groups has been overwhelming and many stories have been shared and new connections made with such fun along the way. The Groups have been supported by both the SACWA who have allowed us to use their rooms and provided volunteers, as well as the Naracoorte […]

Redlegs Hockey Club

Redlegs Hockey Club

By Amanda Davey Redlegs Hockey Club is a well established club which is part of the Naracoorte District Hockey Association. Redlegs has been running for over 40 years with some of the original members still contributing towards the club. Our focus as a club is about having fun while getting fit and getting together as a strong community club that supports one another. We have many families playing with kids as young as 4yrs and adults into their 50s. As a club there are a lot of members putting their hand up supporting the club in various ways from canteen duties, umpiring, coaching, fundraisers and it’s this kind of club support that allows our club to thrive. Currently we are fundraising to keep our fees low for the following year making it affordable for the whole family to join in. The next generation of up and coming hockey stars are […]

The Nurtured Village Upper South East

The Nurtured Village Upper South East

By Molly Hannaford The Nurtured Village is a nationally registered maternal mental health charity that relies on the generosity of our community to support young mothers and families around Australia. Myself (Molly Hannaford) and Emma Mehlhopt are proud to be supporting an Upper SE Limestone Coast branch that services Naracoorte, Lucindale, Padthaway, Bordertown, Mundulla and Keith. Our goal being to bring back the traditional village of support in early parenthood.  Each month, with the help of community members and The News Gives Back program, we knock on a families door with a car boot load full of donated home cooked meals, baby essentials, non-perishables and small gifts in an effort to provide practical support to families, express solidarity, kindness and in the process, forge villages in our community. Reminding them no matter how deep the trenches of parenting feel, there is a tribe of people who are tunnelling with them.  […]

Spending welcomed in MacKillop

Spending welcomed in MacKillop

Your Say: Nick McBride MP, Member for MacKillop The Member for MacKillop, Nick McBride MP, has welcomed specific spending on Education and Health in this year’s Labor State Budget, but says there are still many areas that need to be addressed in the region. Mr McBride says he was pleased to see money directed towards upgrades to ageing school infrastructure, including a massive $9.7 million to the Meningie Area School. “The Meningie Area School has plans for a new Administration and Library area. I advocated to the Education Minister for this upgrade, and am pleased to see that the Government has listened and chosen to invest in this school.” Other schools in MacKillop to receive funding include the following: – Coomandook Area School – New science lab and LED lighting – Naracoorte High School – Refurbishment for music area – Naracoorte South Primary School – refurbishment of toilet facilities – […]

Creek walk to nowhere

Creek walk to nowhere

Your Say: Helen and Kingsley Baker, Naracoorte Every day we walk our dogs along the Naracoorte creek, weather allowing, and different sections each day. Walking down the ramp behind Foodland to get onto the walk, what a shock we got. The section to the right to go under the railway bridge was blocked off by huge rocks, and the walk dug up and a lot of trees planted blocking the whole area off.  So then walked to the “duck pond ” area, only to be shocked again, as trees planted in the water way, which will be washed away, the tree guards to be washed away as well, to become an eye sore along the creek. Continuing along behind the caravan park, a lot more trees planted once again in the water ways. These are completely covered in water, these trees require little water, so will die. What a dreadful […]

Population: to what end?

Your Say: Jennifer Grundy, Naracoorte An increase in population in our cities and towns begs the question, to what end? It seems to be governments, developers and city councils in particular that advocate such policies which do not necessarily align with the wishes of the general population, whose domain it is to determine such life changing decisions. The aim to fill the employment gap is not the answer because larger numbers of people require ever more services and a larger population will not guarantee a better or more prosperous nation. I suspect our leaders have succumbed to globalisation in all its aspects which is to the detriment of the way of life we have known and cherished and still desire for this country.

No real incentives

By Nasik Swami Shadow Minister for Regional Health Services Penny Pratt says the state government has failed to offer real incentives in the budget to attract and retain doctors and nurses to the region. Ms Pratt said she was “very disappointed with last week’s State Labor Budget, which ploughed an extra $2.3billion just into health but did nothing to offer real incentives”. “While the Victorian Labor Government has put $201million on the table to entice health workers to move there, the best Minister Chris Picton can offer is a reimbursement of up to $15,000 once an overseas trained doctor has already moved to our state,” Ms Pratt said. “When we crunch the numbers, they are still out of pocket by up to $23,000. The numbers just don’t stack up.” She said the only new money in the budget for the Limestone Coast was $1million to undertake a planning study for […]

Financial disaster

By Nasik Swami The Tatiara District Council is in a “financial disaster” with a lack of transparency and lots of coverups it has been claimed. This is how concerned ratepayer Peter Barras of Bordertown described the council, alleging the public had lost trust, respect, and confidence in its elected representatives to run council affairs. Mr Barras, who attended the council meeting in Bordertown on June 13, wrote a letter to the council seeking answers on the council’s failed purchase of a truck, resulting in a loss of $356,000 of ratepayer funds. “At a time when families are experiencing unprecedented cost of living pressures and many businesses are still struggling after recent years, it was breathtaking to see this council lose $356,000 and then have the temerity to propose a 5 percent increase in council rates,” he said. Mr Barras asked if the ratepayers of the Tatiara District were punished for […]

Huge blow

By Nasik Swami The 2023–24 national budget forecasts a huge South Australian brain drain, with 12,200 people predicted to leave the state over the next four years. South Australian shadow minister for finance and tax reform, Heidi Girolamo, says this is “alarming” as the state is already struggling to attract skilled workers. “This is a huge blow for the industry as the state prepares for AUKUS (trilateral security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States),” Ms Girolamo said. She said the Liberal Party has been calling for a skills and workforce strategy for months now, but the government seems to be sitting on its hands. Ms Girolamo said this would put enormous pressure on South Australian businesses, particularly those in smaller towns that are already going through tough times. “My advice for small businesses would be to assess all your outgoings and understand where your money is […]

Hybrid vehicle

Hybrid vehicle

I thought NEWS readers might get a kick out of this 1930’s version of a ‘Hybrid vehicle’ from the Sheeps Back Museum photo collection. I found it while searching the museums 3500 photo collection in preparation for a new exhibit on ‘working horses’. There was no information recorded with the picture except that it is a model T Ford truck. If anyone knows anything else, contact me at 0428 810 111.
