By Nasik Swami The Tatiara District Council needs to make money from workers who will occupy the newly completed workers accommodation at the Bordertown Caravan Park, says an elected counsellor. During a council meeting, Cr Miles Hannemann argued that the $300 per week fee for the workers’ accommodation was too little for a council that was financially struggling. In a report that factored in the current ‘market context’ for providing medium-term worker’s accommodation, the council administration proposed a fee schedule of $300 to be set for the furnished worker’s accommodation. The council was divided on the proposal, with some councillors saying the fee was fair and would attract workers to come to Bordertown, stay there, and spend money. “Council does not have many streams of income, and we have got these units at $300 per two people; that’s $35 a night per person,” Cr Hannemann said. Judges announced for the 2023 Tatiara Art Prize

By Naomi Fallon, Tatiara District Council, Director Walkway Gallery  Entries for the Tatiara Art Prize will close at the end of this month. Held every two years, the $10,000 acquisitive prize invites submissions of new or recent work by Australian artists in any medium, other than photography. Presented by the Walkway Gallery since 2013, the prize is generously supported by the Tatiara District Council. Finalists will be selected by a national judging panel announced today. In 2023, the Tatiara Art Prize judges are Lauren Mustillo; Visual Art Manager at Country Arts SA; Rebecca Evans, Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the Art Gallery of South Australia and Joshua White, Director of the Hamilton Art Gallery. Free entry for locals

By Josie Collins, Media Manager, Naracoorte Lucindale Council   LOCALS can once again enjoy free entry to the Naracoorte Caves when they take along their visiting family or friends in the re-launch of an exciting initiative to strengthen our unique connection with the World Heritage site. The timely re-launch of the initiative at the start of the July school holidays is a collaborative project between National Parks and Wildlife Service SA and Naracoorte Lucindale Council. Local residents in the Naracoorte Lucindale Council area will receive free tour entry at the Caves when they take a visitor along to the park with them. So, a local family can take a visiting family along to the Caves and the visiting family will pay but the locals won’t. By Sophie, founder of the charity Running for Premature Babies I started this charity 17 years ago after losing all three of my prematurely born triplets to their prematurity. I wanted to reach out to you as a local young man in your community who was born at the same gestation as my triplets but was lucky enough to survive, and who is now doing something amazing and I would so love for your local Naracoorte News to publish this story! Lachy Miles, aged 25, is taking part in the Run Melbourne running event on Sunday 16 July to support my charity, which is raising funds for a lifesaving neonatal ventilator for the Monash Newborn NICU, which will save the lives of premature babies. Balharry Memorial Kindergarten fundraiser

By Rachel Savage Exciting new advancements are in the works for The Balharry Memorial Children’s Centre in Lucindale at the start of 2024. One of the advancements include new nature play spaces for the children to enjoy and engage in. The centre is looking to raise $30,000 by the end of the year for new nature play spaces. The new play spaces will include a bridge, fort and a cave. The Governing Council and staff at the centre are excited for the children to have improved outdoor play spaces to encourage physical development and imaginative play. The centre will be fundraising throughout 2023 with our current fundraiser a wood drive. Parents and staff have been busy cutting and splitting fire wood for the public to purchase. All Office Bearers vacated their positions. By Erin Mcwaters The Shitbox Rally Spring 2023 team of Shannon and Erin, along with the talented Lucindale Country Club catering crew hosted the Lucindale Survivors Shitbox Golf Challenge on Sunday, June 11 th , and “Sherlee the Shitbox” turned up with the perfect weather in the boot! The Shitbox Rally participants raise awareness and funds for the much-needed Cancer Council, and to even get off the start line, all 250 teams need to raise a minimum of $5k to start the Rally, in a car worth less than $1,500, which leaves Port Douglas in October bound for Adelaide via Birdsville. Wine bottles lined the tables of the Coonawarra Hall on Wednesday 7th June, as winemakers and production staff alike, revealed their offerings in an opportunity to gain a view of the 2023 vintage from across the region. McGrath Breast Care Nurse bolsters support for breast cancer patients in the Upper South-East

By McGrath Foundation Families impacted by breast cancer in the Upper South-East of South Australia will receive a huge boost in support, with the addition of a new McGrath Breast Care Nurse to the area. With 57 people diagnosed with breast cancer every day in Australia there is an increasing need for specialist McGrath Breast Care Nurses to support those impacted by the disease. McGrath Breast Care Nurses provide important physical, psychosocial and emotional support to local families experiencing breast cancer, from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment. Research by the McGrath Foundation shows early access to a McGrath Breast Care Nurse improves both the outcomes and experience of a person with breast cancer. By Graham Pymer, MLA Cattle: LWB 27 – LWY 209 – LWC 143 – OAY 5 Naracoorte agents yarded a larger offering of 384 cattle this week, made up of 209 young cattle, 125 cows, 27 bulls and a few open auction young cattle. Quality was mostly good with the usual buying group operating in a dearer market over most categories. Young cattle sold to 436c to be to 20c/kg dearer. The few grown steers sold to 330c to be dearer on last week. Beef bred cows sold to 260c/kg to be to 10c/kg dearer with the 2 and 3 score cows to 20c/kg dearer in places.   Young cattle mostly sold to the trade from 265c to 426c and to feeders from 265c to 376c/kg. By Chris Oldfield A TRADE school and further education facility in Naracoorte are opportunities which Nick McBride could work towards achieving as an Independent Member for MacKillop. Such a facility would include training for aged care and allied health as well as other vocations. The suggestions came from Naracoorte Lucindale mayor Patrick Ross in the wake of Mr McBride’s resignation from the SA Liberal Party. Mr McBride, who first joined the party around 30 years ago, had his key supporters stripped from their positions within the party during a meeting at Hatherleigh two weeks ago. Factional issues simmering within the party flared publicly in April when Mr McBride’s wife Katherine announced her pre-selection bid against the Federal Member for Barker, Tony Pasin.  The resounding support for Mr Pasin was reflected in a vote 284 against Ms McBride’s 54.
