Keith v Mundulla 22 July 2023

By Barb Altus The lead alternated multiple times during the very closely contested match before Mundulla retook the lead at the end of the third quarter and finished strongly to win by 28 points. After some minor scores the Tigers goaled first when Hinge and Stephan drove the ball to Guy who kicked truly, then Studham and King slammed the ball to Hinge whose banana kick from the boundary close to goal was accurate. McAuley, Innes, Bibby and Seb Schreiber were strong for Keith who replied when Wilson, McNeil and Colby Read worked the ball to Wade who made no mistake, and the Crows attacked repeatedly but only minor scores ensued before the Moots’ Noll and the Mosey brothers directed the ball to Hinge who kicked truly and at quarter-time Mundulla led 3-2-20 to 1-5-11. Keith goaled first in the second term when Innes and Hender forced the ball to […]

Footy report

The evenness of the KNTFL was underlined again on Saturday with some very close results and a near upset of the year. Bottom side Kybybolite led for most of the day before succumbing to top team Border Districts by just two goals in what would’ve been the upset of the year so far. Kyby led by 4 points at the last change but Borders’ class players stepped up when it mattered to win 12.6 to 10.6, with Mackenzie Bower kicking 4 goals and on-baller Mark Quinn 3. Mundulla powered away in the last quarter to have an important win over Keith. Mundulla led by only two points at the last change, but kicked four goals to none in the last quarter to win 13.10 to 8.12 and hold onto second spot on the ladder. James Hinge is running into some good form and kicked six goals for Mundulla, while Blake […]

Creek walk trees

Your Say: Robyn Hage I was very pleased to read Helen and Kingsley Baker’s article “Creek walk to nowhere” last week. I was walking the creek walk the day of planting, and it took 8 men to plant those hundreds of trees, obviously no one had any knowledge of the natives and grasses they were planting as besides being planted in the watercourse, they are planted far too close together. I believe if I walk that route this time next year, I will not see any alive. What a waste of time and money.

Power prices rort

Power prices rort

Your Say: Ken Grundy, Naracoorte Most power prices have risen by 25% but there are some reported to soon double. The feeble answers provided across the board say to ‘put on an extra jumper’ or ‘shop around’. Just imagine if basic food or fuel prices suddenly rose by such astronomical amounts  –  there would be uproar! Where are the political leaders in this case? The Government Minister Bowen smiles while he repeats, like a cracked record, that renewables provide the cheapest power.  Where is this beast? Opposition spokesmen reckon we need to generate more power to presumably offer more competition.  Well, we have adequate power now so why would more help?  Every time we turn the switch, the light shows power is evident.  Only in rare circumstances is there a shortage. Somewhere along the wires between the generation and the consumer there must be one or more cases of rorting. […]

The Voice

Your Say: Arnold Pfitzner Why are we faced with a race-based referendum on enshrining special privileges in the Constitution forever?  How can anyone seriously claim that this will unite all Australians?  How about ‘it is not meant to’.  Marxist in origin, this change is designed to tear down institutions, according to Thomas Mayo, the indigenous activist who contributed to the design of The Voice.  Readers, this is no “conspiracy theory” as Mayo has previously paid his respects to “the elders of the Communist Party who I think without a doubt have played a very important role in our activism”.  Our part will be to “pay the rent… (and) reparations”.  We all know what that means. A modest request indeed, Albo.

Loading allowance for teachers

Loading allowance for teachers

By Nasik Swami Good news for teachers who go and work in regional schools in South Australia. Minister for Education Blair Boyer has announced that the loading allowance for teachers in rural South Australia will become an ongoing payment from 2024. This means anyone who is eligible to receive the allowance in the 2024 school year, including those who currently receive it and those who move to a regional school or preschool, will receive the country incentive zone allowance for as long as they stay in the country. Mr Boyer said currently, the Country Incentive Zone Allowance expires after five or eight years, depending on the remoteness of the location teachers work in. He said this change will help attract teachers to work in the country and support teacher retention in regional areas, ensuring staffing continuity to support student learning. “Growing up in a small country town, I know firsthand […]

More GPs, specialists needed

By Nasik Swami A new strategy is being looked at to attract and retain general practitioners and specialists in Naracoorte. Limestone Coast Local Health Network Board chairman Grant King says the strategy will focus on retaining medical graduates in the region. “We need to make sure there is more training, so we continue to work with universities and training providers to work on models,” Mr King said. Mr King said there was a model that was used in the Riverland area where doctors were being trained and retained, and that’s something that all the other regions were looking at. “Often people coming into the region, particularly international medical graduates, work in the region and then move onto the metropolitan areas for a whole lot of reasons, so we need to make sure that we can find a way to keep people in the regions practising longer, and that requires a […]

Strangulation of women

By Nasik Swami Strangulation of women has emerged as a new trend among perpetrators of domestic violence in Naracoorte and its surrounding towns. The revelation was made by the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service (LCDVS), which noted an increase in reports of women being strangled by their intimate partners in the last six months. LCDVS regional manager Susie Smith told The News that strangulation was one of the most common acts disclosed by clients seeking specialist domestic violence and homelessness support at Centacare. “Disclosure of physical force to the neck indicates the client is at high or extremely high and imminent risk,” Ms Smith said. She said almost all women who scored as high on a risk assessment indicated strangulation as a form of violence used, whether it be just once or multiple times over the course of the relationship. “Often women don’t recognise a forearm, knee, or push to […]

High flying advice on health care

High flying advice on health care

By Wayne Hawthorne Words of medical advice were given to Probus men at their recent meeting while listening to the incredible career of Dr Sarah Mott who is now lecturing at TAFE Mount Gambier, Department of Nursing. Because men are generally poor at addressing physical and mental health, they were told to “get a grease and oil change regularly, irrespective”. If they cannot get a doctor appointment, they were told to “book one well in advance and use or re-schedule as required. It won’t go to waste if unused”. It became apparent that with her career background, Dr Sarah Mott was eminently qualified to speak of these and other medical matters. Sarah commenced nursing in a small country surgical hospital in UK, and worked in various positions in: Fort Myers, Florida; the Middle East; Geelong; Perth; Sydney; Adelaide; and now Mount Gambier. Certainly a highflyer, given she is a qualified […]
