Reliable connectivity

Reliable connectivity

By Nasik Swami.
The district is in urgent need of a robust and reliable telecommunications infrastructure that can support economic growth, create an inclusive community, and help safely manage emergencies. For many years, many stakeholders in the region have called for an improved digital infrastructure that reduces blackspot areas, boosts internet access, and connects the […]

Police crisis

Police crisis

By Nasik Swami  Bold measures and policies need to be put in place to solve the “crisis” facing police in Naracoorte and its surrounding towns. Shadow Minister for Police Sam Telfer says there are some “real challenges” facing police in South Australia that are having huge repercussions for those living in the region. Mr Telfer told The News that the recruitment and retention of officers was a huge challenge, with many police stations failing to get the required number of officers in a day. “The challenges with recruitment and retention of officers have been laid bare, with the latest statistics showing 248 officers left the force last financial year, which significantly outweighs the rate of recruitment,” he claimed. “Our police officers work so hard to keep our communities safe with the dwindling resources they have, but we have been told that there is a current shortfall of officers across the […]

Creek walk trees

Creek walk trees

Your Say: Robyn Hage I was very pleased to read Helen and Kingsley Baker’s article “Creek walk to nowhere” last week. I was walking the creek walk the day of planting, and it took 8 men to plant those hundreds of trees, obviously no one had any knowledge of the natives and grasses they were planting as besides being planted in the watercourse, they are planted far too close together. I believe if I walk that route this time next year, I will not see any alive. What a waste of time and money.

Response to McBride defection

Response to McBride defection

By Chris Oldfield A TRADE school and further education facility in Naracoorte are opportunities which Nick McBride could work towards achieving as an Independent Member for MacKillop. Such a facility would include training for aged care and allied health as well as other vocations. The suggestions came from Naracoorte Lucindale mayor Patrick Ross in the wake of Mr McBride’s resignation from the SA Liberal Party. Mr McBride, who first joined the party around 30 years ago, had his key supporters stripped from their positions within the party during a meeting at Hatherleigh two weeks ago. Factional issues simmering within the party flared publicly in April when Mr McBride’s wife Katherine announced her pre-selection bid against the Federal Member for Barker, Tony Pasin.  The resounding support for Mr Pasin was reflected in a vote 284 against Ms McBride’s 54. At the time Mr McBride squashed rumours that he was resigning from […]

Arson at Struan

By Chris Oldfield THE fourth fire at Struan was the result of arson and police investigations are continuing. “The investigations into the initial three fires concluded that there were no suspicious circumstances,” Primary Industries Minister Clare Scriven told The News. “The last fire, number four in the recent series, was clearly arson, as vehicles and a shed were broken into and set alight. “The police investigation is ongoing. Primary Industries and Resources SA (PIRSA) is not aware of any charges being laid. “However, this is a matter for SA Police. There has been no stolen equipment reported through the process to date. “On the properties at Struan and Kybybolite, research is undertaken into livestock production (cattle and sheep) and broadacre cropping.” Ms Scriven said specific research was targeted at crop agronomy, grazing management, animal wellbeing and behaviour, livestock nutrition, AgTech and climate change. “Approximately 20 staff are located at Struan […]

Creek walk to nowhere

Creek walk to nowhere

Your Say: Helen and Kingsley Baker, Naracoorte Every day we walk our dogs along the Naracoorte creek, weather allowing, and different sections each day. Walking down the ramp behind Foodland to get onto the walk, what a shock we got. The section to the right to go under the railway bridge was blocked off by huge rocks, and the walk dug up and a lot of trees planted blocking the whole area off.  So then walked to the “duck pond ” area, only to be shocked again, as trees planted in the water way, which will be washed away, the tree guards to be washed away as well, to become an eye sore along the creek. Continuing along behind the caravan park, a lot more trees planted once again in the water ways. These are completely covered in water, these trees require little water, so will die. What a dreadful […]

Mt Gambier sale yards investment

By Tony Pasin MP (source: Tony Pasin MP office / Hansard) The Mount Gambier and District Saleyards Transformation Project is a vital project for the Limestone Coast. The formal concept design will feature soft-fall matting, holding pen reconfigurations, cattle yard roofing, sprinkler systems and rainwater harvesting. The upgrade is described as a once-in-a-generation project essential for our region’s agricultural sector. In the 2020-21 financial year the saleyards grossed a whopping $157 million in sales, transacting 86,000 head of sheep and 65,000 head of cattle. It’s an extremely important infrastructure investment needed for the Limestone Coast’s economy. Its current infrastructure is ageing. The District Council of Grant, who own this important asset, gained bipartisan support for their planned upgrades to the facility prior to the state election last year. Both the Labor and Liberal parties pledged funding to support this vital project. Obviously, with the Labor Party being successful in winning […]
