McBride praises Picton visit

McBride praises Picton visit

By Chris Oldfield. AN $8 million program for the Naracoorte Hospital includes many improvements, but not the full cost of a maternity section upgrade. However, together with a $1 million review of health services, Member for MacKillop Nick McBride remains “excited about health” following a recent visit by Health Minister Chris Picton. He also hopes future funding will improve all hospitals in the MacKillop electorate rather than just “a Taj Mahal at Naracoorte”. Speaking at the August 11, Limestone Coast Local Government Association meeting, Mr McBride praised the recent whirlwind tour by SA Health Minister Chris Picton. The tour took in whistlestop visits to Keith, Bordertown, Naracoorte and Mount Gambier, on August 9. The following day included tours at Millicent, Kingston and Meningie Hospitals. The News understands specialist rural local doctors, critical to country hospitals, were not invited by the SA health bureaucracy. “It was a hell of a tour. […]

A regional health bureaucracy has been blocked from spending $4.3 million on hospital upgrades rather than radiation treatment services in the Limestone Coast. What’s the strategy?

By Nasik Swami The Naracoorte Hospital does not have a specific strategic plan that sets its direction for the future. This newspaper has queried Limestone Coast Local Health Network Board chairman Grant King on the strategic direction of the hospital and what the focus of the strategic plan was. Mr King said the board had a general five-year strategic plan that covered all the sites and was of “very high level”. “The strategic plan for Naracoorte, quite frankly, is to implement the $8m that’s been allocated for stage one redevelopment, beyond that, we would expect there would be a further stage of funding at some point in the future,” he said. “So, from a strategic point of view, we work closely with the executive team at the Naracoorte Hospital to understand where the pressure points are and those things that need to be invested. “So, in terms of the strategic […]

Our cardio Phil dies

Our cardio Phil dies

By Chris Oldfield AFTER saving hundreds of lives in our district, and throughout South Australia, leading cardiologist Dr Phil Tideman OA, has died as a result of bowel cancer, aged 64. It was at Naracoorte and Robe that in 1999 Dr Tideman first teamed up with the Kincraig and Robe Medical Clinics, setting a blueprint for the rest of the nation to follow. At the time – following research he had done in the late 1990s – Dr Tideman was concerned at least three people aged between 50-70 in our region would drop dead each year from heart attacks. Additionally, our country people had a 20 percent less chance of heart attack survival than our city cousins. Dr Tideman was determined to change that statistic, and he did. Through his Integrated Cardiovascular Clinical Network (ICARNET) project, within five years he had bridged the gap. Dr Brian Norcock of Kincraig Medical […]

More GPs, specialists needed

More GPs, specialists needed

By Nasik Swami A new strategy is being looked at to attract and retain general practitioners and specialists in Naracoorte. Limestone Coast Local Health Network Board chairman Grant King says the strategy will focus on retaining medical graduates in the region. “We need to make sure there is more training, so we continue to work with universities and training providers to work on models,” Mr King said. Mr King said there was a model that was used in the Riverland area where doctors were being trained and retained, and that’s something that all the other regions were looking at. “Often people coming into the region, particularly international medical graduates, work in the region and then move onto the metropolitan areas for a whole lot of reasons, so we need to make sure that we can find a way to keep people in the regions practising longer, and that requires a […]

Strangulation of women

By Nasik Swami Strangulation of women has emerged as a new trend among perpetrators of domestic violence in Naracoorte and its surrounding towns. The revelation was made by the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service (LCDVS), which noted an increase in reports of women being strangled by their intimate partners in the last six months. LCDVS regional manager Susie Smith told The News that strangulation was one of the most common acts disclosed by clients seeking specialist domestic violence and homelessness support at Centacare. “Disclosure of physical force to the neck indicates the client is at high or extremely high and imminent risk,” Ms Smith said. She said almost all women who scored as high on a risk assessment indicated strangulation as a form of violence used, whether it be just once or multiple times over the course of the relationship. “Often women don’t recognise a forearm, knee, or push to […]
