By Mary-Ann Koerner The local volunteers of the Naracoorte “Meals on Wheels” branch have again supported Longridge. Meals on Wheels volunteers donate their mileage reimbursement to their local social account, which is then paid forwarded, to support other local organisations charities. This time they have purchased two extra-large, 13-inch iPad’s for our residents to use, and needless to say, since their arrival, they have hardly been turned off! Some older people struggle with mobile technologies, often for reasons other than a lack of technological aptitude. The average smartphone measures 5 to 6 inches. This can make such a screen difficult for the older person with impaired vision to read and the screen size can also present challenges of manual dexterity for seniors who have arthritis or health conditions that cause weakness and unsteadiness in the hands. By Nasik Swami A Naracoorte-Lucindale counsellor has asked the council and his fellow elected members what they intend to do about the poor management of road maintenance and the underutilization of the road-making machinery in the district. In a question with notice submitted on July 13 to be presented in the council’s meeting this month, Cr Trevor Rayner said, “I get re-elected on the promise of trying to address this issue, but at this stage it has been to no avail”. Council chief executive officer Trevor Smart has replied to the question, with a response appearing on the agenda item for the council’s July 25 meeting and published on the council website. McBride fires back

By Nasik Swami My priorities have not changed. That’s the message from member for MacKillop and quitting Liberal Party MP Nick McBride. Mr McBride made the comment while responding to claims made by South Australia Liberal Party leader David Speirs that the MP’s resignation was “disappointing” and a “changing of priorities”. “I would like to make it very clear—my priorities as the Member for MacKillop have not changed,” he said. “As I said in my statement when leaving the Liberal Party, my primary aim is to achieve better outcomes and more funding for the people who live and work in MacKillop.” Mr McBride said that as an independent, he had the freedom to work with whomever was in government to achieve results that benefitted the entire region. “That is my aim. “The people in MacKillop know that I pride myself on having respectful relationships with all sides of politics.” Mr […]

Liberals confident over MacKillop

By Nasik Swami The Liberal Party is adamant that MacKillop will remain a Liberal seat at the 2026 election. South Australia Liberal Party leader David Speirs says the party remained incredibly committed to the South-east despite the recent saga involving MacKillop member Nick McBride’s resignation. In an interview with The News, Mr Speirs launched a scathing attack on Mr McBride, labelling the MP’s decision “disappointing” and a “changing of priorities”. He said Mr McBride walked away from the party for a range of complex “personal reasons” and that his choice was substandard. In the exhibition, Kristi will be displaying blankets and shawls, pots, and embroidered cloths she has designed and made by hand. For Kristi, the process is deeply personal and offers a way to reorientate to her new homeland. Emigrating to Robe from Latvia 12 years ago, Kristi always sensed danger in the native Australian bush, which stemmed from a lack of familiarity regarding what was safe to eat and the names of the trees and flowers. In contrast, during her Latvian childhood, she had the good fortune to be taught about plants and edible nuts and berries by her grandparents, spending many holidays in the woodlands. The state committee have nominated we are studying the country Iceland, our project for the year is food bank and our theme is rural women together. We all look forward to the following program suggestions and completed the program. Our challenge today was put towards members to supply a meal for 4 people for $10. As we have a mixture of ex-rural and townies there was no cheating with produce however big or small growing in your backyard. We were all very interested to see if we could do it. Most members were large pantry holders reduced to no pantry. Challenge accepted! Members all did well I think maybe one member was slightly over budget. Members turned up with soup, tacos, frittata, doorstop, sausage casserole, salad, fried rice, sweet-and-sour chicken wings […]

By Liz Travers Cold weather and winter ills kept a significant number of members home and unable to attend the June Meeting of the Naracoorte Ladies Probus Club. Faye Modra and Judy Biggins were inducted into the Club and members welcomed two visitors to our meeting. Those who were able to attend, enjoyed a morning of friendship and fun. 15 members and two visitors attended. Nicola from FocusOne Health was our guest speaker. Focus One Health provide Care Finder services to the community. Care Finder is an Intensive, short-term, support to help clients understand and access My Aged Care and other community supports. Their team of Care Finders will be able to, support clients to interact with My Aged Care so they can be screened for eligibility, guide clients through the My Aged Care assessment process, attend appointments with them if appropriate. By Heather Gibbons  What a great vibe at the Robe Health Harmony and Happiness Winter Festival on the June long weekend. If you missed it, the next Summer festival will be on January 12-13th 2024.  Different healing modalities, expertise and products from amazing stallholders were showcased at the festival in a friendly, relaxed and stimulating environment. It was great to see people returning to connect with stallholders to stock up on products, experience a healing session or organize a future appointment. Erica, Frances, Joy and Katie Ann were kept busy as many gleaned new personal insights from the readers. Other people went on their way feeling more relaxed and having greater ease of movement after their Crystal Light therapy session with Tracy, bodywork session with Naomi or healing sessions with Heather, Onessa and Don. By Peter Kerr, MLA Cattle: LWB 10 – LWY 149 – LWC 79 – OAY 12 Numbers fell sharply as agents yarded less then half of the week before with 250 head coming forward. These sold to the regular field of trade and processor buyers along with some feeder and restocker interest however with the small number not all of the buying field were fully active. Quality was mixed as the market ranged from firm to a little easier in price. Yearling steers to trade buyers made from 255c to 320c with similar heifers making from 270c to 340c/kg. Feeders sought steers from 250c to 326c with heifers returning from 285c to 325c as restockers took a single pen of steers at 315c/kg. Grown cattle were small in number as steers reached 285c with the heifers making from 218c to also 285c as the trade sourced all of this category. […]

Farmers Beware

Opinion: Mulga Bill Two years ago the WA Parliament passed a Bill to do with restrictions on farmland. It seemed to escape the notice of farmers and their organisations while it remained in the background.  However it came into force on July 1st this year. Any area of land approximately larger than a house block is now under strict regulation. Before a posthole can be dug, farmers will require approval from aboriginal people. Inspection will probably incur a fee and who knows how much delay might be encountered. Not only will the presence of some rare animal be a factor but even spiritual feelings could be involved. This is an outright attack on rights attributed to Private Property and is likely to have a negative impact on valuations. It is not only the WA farmers who are suffering this imposition because North Western Victoria has fallen under very similar restrictions. […]

MLA cattle projections: slaughter numbers up, herd numbers down

Ag Speak: By Kristin Murdock  Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) have released their mid-year cattle industry projections and their forecast for the growth of the Australian beef herd has been moderated downward. The reason being higher slaughter estimates now bite into the ability for the herd to increase. In 2023 the herd is expected to reach 28.7 million head, a revision down of 0.4 per cent from the January 2023 projections. MLA have also revised the 2024 and 2025 herd projections downward by 1.3 per cent and 1.2 per cent, respectively. In 2024 the herd is expected to hit 28.9 million head and reach toward 29.2 million head in 2025. Underpinning the slower herd growth over the next few years has been upward revisions to annual cattle slaughter volumes. CEO saga at Robe’s Royal Circus

By Chris Oldfield ANOTHER acting CEO will soon be called on to fill the void at Robe District Council’s August meeting. Current acting CEO Debbie Brokenshire is unable to attend and she initially called on the director of childcare Karla Dew to cover council’s August meeting as its acting CEO. Ms Brokenshire, founder of The Governator, later reported to council’s July 12 meeting that Ms Dew was “very relieved” not to fill the role. Instead, Ms Brokenshire believed she could find someone to attend the August meeting from a list of available relief CEOs. Robe’s council offices and chamber are situated on a site known as Royal Circus, and some townsfolk believe it is aptly named with a revolving door of CEOs.
