A Labour of Love: Mapping the Co-ordinates of Home

A Labour of Love: Mapping the Co-ordinates of Home

By Susan McLachlan, Karatta Wine Room and Gallery, Kristi Biezaite will be exhibiting her exquisite creations at Karatta Wine Room and Gallery in Robe, opening on 6 August. In the exhibition, Kristi will be displaying blankets and shawls, pots, and embroidered cloths she has designed and made by hand. For Kristi, the process is deeply personal and offers a way to reorientate to her new homeland. Emigrating to Robe from Latvia 12 years ago, Kristi always sensed danger in the native Australian bush, which stemmed from a lack of familiarity regarding what was safe to eat and the names of the trees and flowers. In contrast, during her Latvian childhood, she had the good fortune to be taught about plants and edible nuts and berries by her grandparents, spending many holidays in the woodlands. It’s not easy to obtain this level of knowledge of the Australian bushland, but in her […]

Padthaway WAB tightens their belts with a $10 Budget

Padthaway WAB tightens their belts with a $10 Budget

By Virginia Gale On a lovely cold winters morning we gathered together and enjoyed planning our next year program. The state committee have nominated we are studying the country Iceland, our project for the year is food bank and our theme is rural women together. We all look forward to the following program suggestions and completed the program. Our challenge today was put towards members to supply a meal for 4 people for $10. As we have a mixture of ex-rural and townies there was no cheating with produce however big or small growing in your backyard. We were all very interested to see if we could do it. Most members were large pantry holders reduced to no pantry. Challenge accepted! Members all did well I think maybe one member was slightly over budget. Members turned up with soup, tacos, frittata, doorstop, sausage casserole, salad, fried rice, sweet-and-sour chicken wings […]

Health, Harmony and Happiness Festival at the Robe Institute

Health, Harmony and Happiness Festival at the Robe Institute

By Heather Gibbons  What a great vibe at the Robe Health Harmony and Happiness Winter Festival on the June long weekend. If you missed it, the next Summer festival will be on January 12-13th 2024.  Different healing modalities, expertise and products from amazing stallholders were showcased at the festival in a friendly, relaxed and stimulating environment. It was great to see people returning to connect with stallholders to stock up on products, experience a healing session or organize a future appointment. Erica, Frances, Joy and Katie Ann were kept busy as many gleaned new personal insights from the readers. Other people went on their way feeling more relaxed and having greater ease of movement after their Crystal Light therapy session with Tracy, bodywork session with Naomi or healing sessions with Heather, Onessa and Don. Dazzling jewellery and crystals, colourful clothing and handmade items, books and health products were displayed. A […]

Creek walk trees

Your Say: Robyn Hage I was very pleased to read Helen and Kingsley Baker’s article “Creek walk to nowhere” last week. I was walking the creek walk the day of planting, and it took 8 men to plant those hundreds of trees, obviously no one had any knowledge of the natives and grasses they were planting as besides being planted in the watercourse, they are planted far too close together. I believe if I walk that route this time next year, I will not see any alive. What a waste of time and money.

Power prices rort

Your Say: Ken Grundy, Naracoorte Most power prices have risen by 25% but there are some reported to soon double. The feeble answers provided across the board say to ‘put on an extra jumper’ or ‘shop around’. Just imagine if basic food or fuel prices suddenly rose by such astronomical amounts  –  there would be uproar! Where are the political leaders in this case? The Government Minister Bowen smiles while he repeats, like a cracked record, that renewables provide the cheapest power.  Where is this beast? Opposition spokesmen reckon we need to generate more power to presumably offer more competition.  Well, we have adequate power now so why would more help?  Every time we turn the switch, the light shows power is evident.  Only in rare circumstances is there a shortage. Somewhere along the wires between the generation and the consumer there must be one or more cases of rorting. […]

The Voice

Your Say: Arnold Pfitzner Why are we faced with a race-based referendum on enshrining special privileges in the Constitution forever?  How can anyone seriously claim that this will unite all Australians?  How about ‘it is not meant to’.  Marxist in origin, this change is designed to tear down institutions, according to Thomas Mayo, the indigenous activist who contributed to the design of The Voice.  Readers, this is no “conspiracy theory” as Mayo has previously paid his respects to “the elders of the Communist Party who I think without a doubt have played a very important role in our activism”.  Our part will be to “pay the rent… (and) reparations”.  We all know what that means. A modest request indeed, Albo.

By Josie Collins, Media Manager, Naracoorte Lucindale Council   LOCALS can once again enjoy free entry to the Naracoorte Caves when they take along their visiting family or friends in the re-launch of an exciting initiative to strengthen our unique connection with the World Heritage site. The timely re-launch of the initiative at the start of the July school holidays is a collaborative project between National Parks and Wildlife Service SA and Naracoorte Lucindale Council. Local residents in the Naracoorte Lucindale Council area will receive free tour entry at the Caves when they take a visitor along to the park with them. Running for Premature Babies

By Sophie, founder of the charity Running for Premature Babies I started this charity 17 years ago after losing all three of my prematurely born triplets to their prematurity. I wanted to reach out to you as a local young man in your community who was born at the same gestation as my triplets but was lucky enough to survive, and who is now doing something amazing and I would so love for your local Naracoorte News to publish this story! Lachy Miles, aged 25, is taking part in the Run Melbourne running event on Sunday 16 July to support my charity, which is raising funds for a lifesaving neonatal ventilator for the Monash Newborn NICU, which will save the lives of premature babies. Lachy’s story is remarkable. Born at 23 weeks gestation he wasn’t expected to survive this premature birth and was given a 20% chance of survival. Lachy […]

Lochaber WAB New Year

By Angie Burzacott Tuesday June 6th, Lochaber WAB Members gathered at Lochaber Hall. Following a most enjoyable 2021/2022 year the meeting was called to close business for the 2022/2023 Year. All Office Bearers vacated their positions. The Annual General Meeting then proceeded.  CHAIR PERSON – Chris Thornton SECRETARY – Lyn Bellman Lochaber WAB are a small group of members and at times these positions take some time with care to fill. As numbers have dropped, we opened a discussion about how we all enjoy the friendships, sharing different activities we know that to see this Branch fold, is not an option! Knowing how full everyone’s lives are, the suggestion was put forward, that all of us “share the load”. No one is expected to do it all. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance and ideas and plans can be fulfilled. Each year WAB choose a “Country Of Study”. This year […]

Shitbox Golf Challenge

Shitbox Golf Challenge

By Erin Mcwaters The Shitbox Rally Spring 2023 team of Shannon and Erin, along with the talented Lucindale Country Club catering crew hosted the Lucindale Survivors Shitbox Golf Challenge on Sunday, June 11 th , and “Sherlee the Shitbox” turned up with the perfect weather in the boot! The Shitbox Rally participants raise awareness and funds for the much-needed Cancer Council, and to even get off the start line, all 250 teams need to raise a minimum of $5k to start the Rally, in a car worth less than $1,500, which leaves Port Douglas in October bound for Adelaide via Birdsville. The aim of the day was to fundraise, however a lot of fun was had by the 19 teams entered, including teeing off on the 1 st off of a tyre, navigating through obstacles on multiple greens, nearest to pins, nearest to rope and longest drive and a $5 […]
