By Nasik Swami  Bold measures and policies need to be put in place to solve the “crisis” facing police in Naracoorte and its surrounding towns. Shadow Minister for Police Sam Telfer says there are some “real challenges” facing police in South Australia that are having huge repercussions for those living in the region. Mr Telfer told The News that the recruitment and retention of officers was a huge challenge, with many police stations failing to get the required number of officers in a day. “The challenges with recruitment and retention of officers have been laid bare, with the latest statistics showing 248 officers left the force last financial year, which significantly outweighs the rate of recruitment,” he claimed. “Our police officers work so hard to keep our communities safe with the dwindling resources they have, but we have been told that there is a current shortfall of officers across the […]

By Nasik Swami A regional policing review team has been set up to examine police requirements in the Limestone Coast region. The review is part of the strategies employed by the South Australia Police to make communities in the region safer from criminal activities and increase police presence on our streets. SA Police told The News that they remained committed to the achievement of safer communities across regional South Australia despite the many challenges, ensuring police are in the right place at the right time, targeting the right people and issues. “Ongoing consultation within the community to identify and address issues relating particularly to reducing incidences of serious and fatal collisions on roads, family and domestic violence, child protection, vulnerable community victimisation, and preventing crime first is a key part of how we keep our communities safe,” a police spokesperson said. By Nasik Swami Many children in the district are growing up in an environment of fear because of domestic violence, says a regional community family care organisation. Limestone Coast-based Centacare says their data shows many children from the area have developed unusual behaviour patterns because of their experiences at home. The executive manager for Domestic Violence, Homelessness, and Youth Services, Megan Welsh, told The News that domestic violence could have long-lasting effects on children’s development, behaviour, and wellbeing. “Children may feel guilty for being unable to protect their parent, blame themselves for the abuse, or even step in to try and stop the violence,” Ms Welsh said. She said living with constant trauma and stress affected a child’s development, regardless of whether they were physically hurt or witnessed harm done to family members. ‘’They may disengage with education because the violence at home makes it difficult to attend school regularly. By Nasik Swami Give enough incentives to attract and retain police officers to work in rural South Australia. That’s the call to the government from the Police Association of South Australia, the union representing police officers. President Mark Carroll told The News that it was a “perennial challenge” to attract enough police officers to work in rural South Australia and then retain them over the long term. “One of the ways for SAPOL to achieve this is to ensure there are appropriate incentives for members to transfer into country areas,” he said. Mr Carroll said the South-east, unfortunately, was no exception to the wider staffing predicament, which was ubiquitous throughout South Australia Police. “As an example, the Naracoorte and Bordertown areas have a current shortfall of four permanent staff members. “Overall, SAPOL has a deficit of at least 200 full-time equivalent sworn police officers across the entire force,” Mr Carroll claimed. Tennis SA State League All Stars coming to the South East

By Breanna Hassam, Tennis SA Tennis SA has today announced the South East region will host the Tennis SA State League All Stars, as part of the 2023-24 State League season.  Tennis SA, in conjunction with the Naracoorte Lucindale Council and Lucindale Country Club, will host the event at the Lucindale Country Club on Saturday 25 November 2023.   The state’s highest level competition will visit regional South Australia for the third time, following the highly successful events held in Port Lincoln and the Riverland in previous years.  Eight Tennis SA State League players will join six local tennis players to make two teams for the head-to-head which will feature singles, doubles and mixed doubles.  Players will also take part in a variety of community engagement and tourism activities while they are in the region.   In an exciting new addition to the All Stars competition, local children are being encouraged to […]

Mundulla made a pre-finals statement by comfortably beating fellow top five team Kingston in last Saturday’s KNTFL match of the round. After an even start, Mundulla pulled further away the longer the game went, to win 16.16 to 11.8. Gun goalkicker James Hinge was again in good touch with 5 goals and captain Nick Mosey was named best player, while Kingston’s young locals Ethan Murdock and Jack Harding were among the best for the seasiders. Mundulla’s win means the Tigers remain within reach of top spot on the ladder, while Kingston now has no hope of making the top 3 and will play in the first knockout elimination when finals arrive. Leave the KNTFL alone

Opinion: Bush Turkey It’s a real shame that the top 5 teams in the KNTFL put such a gap on the rest of the comp so early in the season. Borders, Keith, Mundulla, Naracoorte and Kingston have pretty much been confirmed as the finalists right from about round 7 or 8, which has sucked a lot of the interest out of the finals race. The shame of it is, just looking at the ladder as a snapshot would give you the idea that it’s a competition split down the middle with the top 5 being so much better than the bottom 5. Kingston in fifth spot is 4 wins ahead of Padthaway in 6th, so the top half the ladder is streets ahead of the bottom half. But the truth of it is, and the reason why I think we have such a healthy competition, is that our bottom half […]
