What a huge four days of Carnival fun, food and bowling as we held our annual Australia Day weekend Four Day Tournament. One of my firmly held principles is that after opening 1NT or a Weak Two, I will not bid again unless Forced or invited to do so.  Stayman and Transfers count as forcing bids after 1NT and a single raise of 1NT to 2NT counts as an invitation, to bid 3NT with a maximum, or Pass with a minimum.

This week saw Kyby take on Casterton in very warm conditions played at South Gambier Football club. Casterton having won 100-0 in the previous round were always going to be a tough opponent but Kyby gave them a run for their money matching them score for score during the first half of the game.

Sunday 21st January the RBC Ladies and Men’s Pairs Championships were held. In the first round of the ladies pairs, Judy Bermingham and Helen Dawson def Bronwyn Matthews and Judy Phillips after Bronwyn and Judy led until the 11th end where the score was even, then Judy and Helen won the last end to win 17-14.

Tuesday 23rd RBC welcomed the Adelaide Crows as one of their many activities scheduled for their first day of a competitive program. They come through in groups of 8 with 4 being selected to compete against a Robe team that included Stephen Kennett, David Robinson, Pat Lynch, Errol Jennings and Vic Dawson.

73 players came from around the region and played the Mt.Gambier course and good scoring was the result. Local lad Peppi Pace took out First Division on his first outing with the vets, scoring 39 points. How good is this he was heard to say! Chris Gabriel, another local, and Peter DeLaine from Robe had 38, taking the minor places.

There were 28 ladies who enjoyed playing 28 boards of bridge last week, a great escape from the outside humidity!  Our members are always very grateful for both Liz Ogilvie and Sue Hood who organise our bridge boards every week and also their computer literacy in sourcing and communicating results.

It was a home game again on the weekend with Naracoorte hosting Centrals. Ken Sisson pitched to Brady Fox for the game. Centrals were able to get some safe hits but through some excellent pitching and good backing up in the field they were restricted to one run.

By Bridging the Gap
Bridge resumed at the Naracoorte Bowling Club last week and it was wonderful having 22 enthusiastic members.  Four ladies, who only began bridge last year, all finished in the top 3 pairs which was a fantastic result.
