Free entry for locals

By Josie Collins, Media Manager, Naracoorte Lucindale Council   LOCALS can once again enjoy free entry to the Naracoorte Caves when they take along their visiting family or friends in the re-launch of an exciting initiative to strengthen our unique connection with the World Heritage site. The timely re-launch of the initiative at the start of the July school holidays is a collaborative project between National Parks and Wildlife Service SA and Naracoorte Lucindale Council. Local residents in the Naracoorte Lucindale Council area will receive free tour entry at the Caves when they take a visitor along to the park with them. So, a local family can take a visiting family along to the Caves and the visiting family will pay but the locals won’t. With savings in their pocket, the local family could pay for their visitors as a bit of a treat, or even split the costs with their […]

Running for Premature Babies

By Sophie, founder of the charity Running for Premature Babies I started this charity 17 years ago after losing all three of my prematurely born triplets to their prematurity. I wanted to reach out to you as a local young man in your community who was born at the same gestation as my triplets but was lucky enough to survive, and who is now doing something amazing and I would so love for your local Naracoorte News to publish this story! Lachy Miles, aged 25, is taking part in the Run Melbourne running event on Sunday 16 July to support my charity, which is raising funds for a lifesaving neonatal ventilator for the Monash Newborn NICU, which will save the lives of premature babies. Lachy’s story is remarkable. Born at 23 weeks gestation he wasn’t expected to survive this premature birth and was given a 20% chance of survival. Lachy […]

Lochaber WAB New Year

By Angie Burzacott Tuesday June 6th, Lochaber WAB Members gathered at Lochaber Hall. Following a most enjoyable 2021/2022 year the meeting was called to close business for the 2022/2023 Year. All Office Bearers vacated their positions. The Annual General Meeting then proceeded.  CHAIR PERSON – Chris Thornton SECRETARY – Lyn Bellman Lochaber WAB are a small group of members and at times these positions take some time with care to fill. As numbers have dropped, we opened a discussion about how we all enjoy the friendships, sharing different activities we know that to see this Branch fold, is not an option! Knowing how full everyone’s lives are, the suggestion was put forward, that all of us “share the load”. No one is expected to do it all. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance and ideas and plans can be fulfilled. Each year WAB choose a “Country Of Study”. This year […]

Shitbox Golf Challenge

The aim of the day was to fundraise, however a lot of fun was had by the 19 teams entered, including teeing off on the 1 st off of a tyre, navigating through obstacles on multiple greens, nearest to pins, nearest to rope and longest drive and a $5 […]

First taste of 2023 looks a classic

First taste of 2023 looks a classic

By Coonawarra Vignerons The Coonawarra Wine industry, together with other representatives from the Limestone Coast Wine Region, have gathered to undertake a ‘post vintage tasting’ of over 100 wines from the 2023 Vintage. Wine bottles lined the tables of the Coonawarra Hall on Wednesday 7th June, as winemakers and production staff alike, revealed their offerings in an opportunity to gain a view of the 2023 vintage from across the region. Bruce Gregory, Senior Winemaker for Majella Wines, has been involved with hosting the Post Vintage tasting for quite a few years, and was very impressed with the samples that had been submitted for tasting from producers across the region. “There is no shortage of variety in the bottles presented, from light whites to robust reds. To some extent many of the wines are in an unfinished condition, however, the tasting is by no means a wine show.” “It’s an opportunity […]

Go girls!

Go girls!

By Kristin Murdock Women in agriculture in Australia are actively involved in various aspects of the agricultural industry. They play crucial roles in farming, agribusiness, research, education, and advocacy. The agricultural sector in Australia offers numerous opportunities for girls and women to pursue rewarding careers and make significant contributions to the industry’s development and sustainability. The desire to contribute to the traditionally male-dominated industry is evident in the Naracoorte area, with Naracoorte High School students, keen to be a part of the sector. NHS students, Eliza and Millie, who are in Year 7, are both keen to have a future in agriculture and are currently studying the subject as part of their curriculum. “I really think girls can play a big part in the agriculture industry,” Millie said. Eliza, who hails from a farm near Naracoorte said she loved the lifestyle and the opportunities it offers. “Even though we have […]

Response to McBride defection

By Chris Oldfield A TRADE school and further education facility in Naracoorte are opportunities which Nick McBride could work towards achieving as an Independent Member for MacKillop. Such a facility would include training for aged care and allied health as well as other vocations. The suggestions came from Naracoorte Lucindale mayor Patrick Ross in the wake of Mr McBride’s resignation from the SA Liberal Party. Mr McBride, who first joined the party around 30 years ago, had his key supporters stripped from their positions within the party during a meeting at Hatherleigh two weeks ago. Factional issues simmering within the party flared publicly in April when Mr McBride’s wife Katherine announced her pre-selection bid against the Federal Member for Barker, Tony Pasin.  The resounding support for Mr Pasin was reflected in a vote 284 against Ms McBride’s 54. At the time Mr McBride squashed rumours that he was resigning from […]

Arson at Struan

By Chris Oldfield THE fourth fire at Struan was the result of arson and police investigations are continuing. “The investigations into the initial three fires concluded that there were no suspicious circumstances,” Primary Industries Minister Clare Scriven told The News. “The last fire, number four in the recent series, was clearly arson, as vehicles and a shed were broken into and set alight. “The police investigation is ongoing. Primary Industries and Resources SA (PIRSA) is not aware of any charges being laid. “However, this is a matter for SA Police. There has been no stolen equipment reported through the process to date. “On the properties at Struan and Kybybolite, research is undertaken into livestock production (cattle and sheep) and broadacre cropping.” Ms Scriven said specific research was targeted at crop agronomy, grazing management, animal wellbeing and behaviour, livestock nutrition, AgTech and climate change. “Approximately 20 staff are located at Struan […]

People still getting sick

By Chris Oldfield COVID, various types of influenza and “man-flu” as well as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are making some people very sick throughout the district. The Federal Government announced last February it was closing the Naracoorte Respiratory Clinic. But that did not mean the end of COVID or other respiratory illnesses for residents and visitors. “COVID is certainly still going through Naracoorte at the moment,” Dr Jeffery Taylor said. In 2020 Dr Taylor of Kincraig Medical Clinic was the first doctor rostered for the government’s respiratory clinic. Now three years later, there have been some big changes regarding COVID. “The big advantage now is with most people having had their vaccinations, and also having access to antivirals, we’ve been able to mitigate the severity of COVID dramatically,” Dr Taylor said. “So, people are a lot more aware (and) they want to get themselves tested early. “Some people breeze through […]
