2023 KNTFL Junior Colts Grand Final: Naracoorte v Kybybolite

Sep 19, 2023 | Article, Sports, This Week's Issue

By Barb Altus. Naracoorte started very strongly, with a goal to Ashton Reti inside the first minute, before Darcy duRand kicked truly at the two-minute mark, then Tommy Taylor made no mistake four minutes in, and goaled again to give the Demons four goals in six minutes. They kept attacking but the Kybybolite defence rushed two behinds before the Dees’ last shot was another minor score so at the first break Naracoorte led 4-3-27 to 0-0-0. Kyby scored first in the second term, but only registered a behind before the Demons’ T Taylor goaled again, before Pilkington registered the Tigers’ first goal seven minutes in. The Dees replied with two goals to Thraviz Coronel in as many minutes, followed by two more behinds, so at half-time Naracoorte led 7-5-47 to 1-1-7. Levi Moss, Charles Nolan, Harry Brewin, Jack Pilkington, Max Crossling and Thomas Malone were playing well for Kybybolite and […]

Higgins, James shine at Lucindale ladies stroke round

Last Wednesday, 18 Lucindale lady golfers enjoyed playing a stroke round sponsored by Naracoorte Betta Home. The members of the Lucindale Country Club have welcomed their generous support for over four years and encourage all members to reciprocate. Weather conditions were perfect and the course is looking immaculate, a great combination for good scores. Congratulations to Karena Higgins, A grade winner with a nett 71, a wonderful score for the second of four qualifying rounds of Club Championships. Karena rightfully commented on how privileged we are to be able to play golf considering the world’s current turmoil. Ladies president, Sharon Menz was runner-up with a nett 73. Huge congratulations to Judy James who played exceptionally well to be B grade winner with a nett 65, her handicap is now reduced by two. During her round, a bird blessed Judy, often considered to be ‘good luck’. Judy’s precision drive on the […]

Cards refuse to behave

There were six full tables at Bridge@Bowls at the Naracoorte Bowling and Croquet Club on Thursday which was great to see. While the surroundings were pleasant and the company congenial, the cards refused to behave themselves. This is evidenced by the strange distribution of scores on the result sheet. Our three N.S. winners on the day were Jill Jacob/Sandra Haynes, Christine McDonald/Helen Cox, and Marjorie Todd/Jill Redway. For E.W.  we had Janeen Wishart/John Sunderland, Meredith Lawrie/Jenni Castine, and Mary Lush/Sally Clarke. Well done to all placegetters as it was a very tricky day. Congratulations also to Mary Lush/Sally Clarke and Janeen Wishart/John Sunderland for each getting one of those ever elusive slams. The play of the day goes to Meredith Lawrie and Jenni Castine, and centers on the action occurring on Board 29.  Meredith and Jenni had confidently bid up to 4 Hearts when the wily pair of Christine McDonald […]

Mundulla power to strong win

The Padthaway Oval was in magnificent condition, and after a tight, low-scoring first quarter Mundulla took the lead in the second term which they extended with a strong third quarter and held on to win despite the Lions winning the last term. Padthaway scored first but their shot was touched for a point, then the Tigers’ Packer and Davies worked the ball into attack where McGrice snapped accurately. The Lions’ next attacks resulted in minor scores despite good work by Ficken, Holtzbauer, and Green. Mundulla attacked again with King, Ridgway, and Phillips prominent, and Jaeschke and Hinge drove the ball forward where Wiese marked under pressure and kicked truly. Padthaway’s Obst, Colwell, Minns, and McCarthy were working hard and drove the ball forward where Ficken made no mistake from a tight angle, so at quarter-time, the Tigers led narrowly 2-0-12 to 1-3-9. The Lions again opened the scoring in the […]

Roosters run riot under new lights

Things are starting to sort themselves out already after only two rounds of the KNTFL A grade competition in 2026. The four winners of last Saturday’s round 2 matches have declared themselves as finals probabilities, and the four losers of those games have some work to do. In the feature game of the round – the first night game under the new lights at Bordertown – the home side underlined their credentials as a true contender this year with a thumping win over Kybybolite. Kyby have been a finalist in the last two years, but had no answers for the hard-running Roosters who kicked 7.2 to 0.0 in the first quarter to put the result beyond doubt from the start. The game was slightly more even from there, but the Roosters kicked away again at the end to win big 18.11 to 4.4. Bordertown had good players everywhere with Billy […]
